What amazes Jesus? Today, he is amazed at the faith of an outsider, a centurion who believes that Jesus’ words have power to heal. This stands in utter contrast to Jesus’ amazement at the lack of faith of the people of his hometown, Nazareth (Mark 6:6).
It may be easy for those of us who are “insiders,” those of us who have long heard the word of Christ, who have received his precious body and blood within our home, our inmost being, to take it for granted and to forget its saving power.
Praise God for all those on the margins who see things differently and inspire within us new understandings and a greater faith in the amazing power of God that is always coming to us.
