Wednesday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel describes how Jesus gave his disciples their mission, to do what he had been doing since he began his public life, namely, to announce and bring about his Father’s Kingdom. He was the Prophet. By words and actions each disciple is expected to be and do the same. That is what vocation means.

How does this come about? Through the activity of the Holy Spirit. To be an apostle is to allow oneself to be guided by the Spirit, who gives light (knowledge) and strength (ability) to fulfill Jesus’ mission. It means to be indifferent to one’s own initial inclinations so as to be able to discern the activity of the Spirit in forming him to be an apostle, a prophet, a servant of God among others. It’s an on-going activity, irrespective of whether one is old or young; single or married; priest or religious.

Resolve: Today I shall spend some time thanking our Heavenly Father for the grace to respond to Jesus’ call to me to be a prophet, an apostle, and I shall ask the Holy spirit to give me the know-how and strength to fulfill his plan for me in carrying out his plans and endeavors.
