Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

The letter to the Hebrews attempts to tackle the age-old problem of why bad things happen to good people. If God is good, then why were leisure suits allowed to exist?  In today’s second reading the author of Hebrews attempts to solve the problem by identifying those trials we experience in life as “discipline.” As Winston Churchill noted, a kite flies high only against the wind. There is truth to the idea that challenges make us better, but we ultimately stand before the mystery of God’s providence and the presence God with faith that all things will work for the good for those strive for God.
