Monday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

Optional Memorial of Saint Paulinus of Nola, Bishop

Optional Memorial of Saint John Fisher, Bishop and Saint Thomas More, Martyrs

Eyes can be very sensitive. We’ve probably all experienced the discomfort and even pain that a small dust particle can cause in our vision. What can be said of a splinter or a wooden beam?!

If we dive deep below the surface, as Jesus always invites us to do, it can be said that there is often much in our hearts that is preventing us from seeing clearly because of misfortunes, because of suffering imposed, because of sins freely and foolishly chosen. Our vision may be wounded because we are wounded.

Removing the splinter or the beam from our eyes and healing our vision may be a long, gradual process. But ideally it will make us more patient, humble, and compassionate individuals. As we gaze upon the eyes of our neighbors, we will be able to offer a look of love, a love that heals.
