Tuesday of the Third Week of Easter

Optional Memorial of Saint Anselm, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

The reaction of the people to Jesus’ words in today’s gospel is very human, normal. They asked for a sign from him to support their belief.

God’s chosen people wandering through the desert on their way to their promised land asked the same question. The answer was likewise the same.

They were thirsty and hungry. God supplied them with water and bread. With his gifts of Baptism and the Eucharist Jesus hears our plea today, “Give us this bread always.” And He answers: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” That’s faith.

The wording may be different, but my own personal questions, so anxiously asked, are so similar. Here too the answer is: See God present in all your doubts, desires and needs.

Resolve: I shall take some time to pray to Jesus that my faith and the faith of so many others will be strengthened by the Eucharist.
