Introductory Prayer

Father, you created me and put me on earth for a purpose. Jesus, you died for me and call me to complete your work. Holy Spirit, you help me to carry out the work for which I was created and called. In your presence and name—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—I begin my reflection. May all my thoughts and inspirations have their origin in you and be directed to your glory.

Memorial of Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs

Today Jesus raises a young man back to life and gives him to his mother, a scene reminiscent of yesterday’s gospel from John 19.

The image of Jesus giving a child back to his mother is one that touches many hearts. To the many parents that have lost a child, to the many others who have had a falling out, to those that feel that reconciliation is all but impossible, a call to hope can seem so unsatisfactory.

But hope is a balm for that wound, that hurt that can creep up even in our dreams.

God has visited his people. Lord of all hopefulness, stay with us.
