Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, Priest [USA and Jesuit Churches]
Do you ever feel depressed? Know others who are? Reflect on how the physician St. Luke’s remedy.
Symptoms: I withdraw into myself, content and satisfied, wallowing in discontent. Jesus is the remedy. He alone is the prescription that can help me discover happiness. Take what he offers in large doses, himself.
Being rejected and misunderstood by others is often the source of bitterness, but it is also the opportunity to discover a deeper happiness because it invites us to take the remedy Luke offers, a closer, deeper friendship with Jesus, leading to happiness.
Today is the feast of St. Peter Claver, who, in imitation of Jesus, offered himself to those suffering from the evils of slavery, and there was no saint happier than he. Read his biography and see for yourself.
Resolve: Today I will spend some extra time in prayer with the divine physician, Jesus, thanking him for introducing me to a few of his intermediaries like St. Luke and St. Peter Claver, and begging him to have particular mercy on those suffering today from depression.
