Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel reminds me of something that’s easy to forget. Catholics should be joyful and they should spread a measure of mature fun, happiness and joy wherever they are. Even in sad situations hope gives promise to happiness.

That’s what important if we want to share our faith with others because we can’t give to others what we do not have ourselves. Isn’t it true many contemporaries think practicing Catholics are a sad, miserable and depressed lot? Do I help them confirm that falsehood or do I, with God’s blessing, set them right?

We are the salt of the earth because God has chosen us to be his children, his apostles, called to announce the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. What promises greater happiness?

But what if the salt loses its flavor? It ceases to be the reason for what it was made.
And it was made not for itself but to give flavor to something else. What greater reason for happiness, joy and a fun-filled life?

Resolve: Using this Gospel image, I shall examine my own association with others and I shall ask my mother, Mary, to help me see how I am called to aid them achieve the happiness God has promised all us all.
