Friday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time
The might displayed by the Lord as he drove out demons must have left a serious impression on his onlookers. Faced with such acts of power, some were led to believe that it was too good to be true, that those abilities could only be achieved through ill means, namely, Beelzebub. They found it hard to wrap their minds around Jesus who is all good and all true. This skepticism is a symptom of our broken world where evil seems to prevail. And we can often find ourselves being suspicious of true goodness, even when we see it with our own eyes.
“If it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you,” says Jesus to the doubtful crowd in today’s gospel. The Kingdom is indeed upon us. Let us pray that we can see it more and more each day. May the Lord cast away from us the darkness of doubt and skepticism of his action in our world and in our lives.
