Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Contradiction and upturned expectations seem to run rampant in the Bible. No doubt, the first time the parable of the prodigal son was told, listeners to the story would have expected a good scolding at least. And, the idea that the majesty of the kingdom of God can be compared to mustard seed is a little hard to imagine. Today’s reading followers this all-prevalent theme of contradiction and over-turned expectations. No doubt the apostles thought Jesus was going to lead a military revolution or at least set up some organization that gave them dignity and respect. Jesus repremands Peter for not thinking the way God does. Of course, trying to think like God is always a challenge since we are often puzzled by natural disater, human cruelty, and the constant presence of temptation. Today’s gospel does not give us a full window into the mind of God, but it does provide us with a sign post that states that if we are after riches, honor, and pride, we are probably veering away from God’s intentions.
