Saturday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
Today’s gospel challenges me to see God’s presence in all of the happenings of history – the world’s, my neighbor’s, my own. But often my lens becomes contorted by what is pleasurable, worldly. My vision is impaired. Adjustment comes through prayers.
Not to know how to stop and contemplate the presence of the Lord in the happenings about me risks allowing myself to be taken up in the whirl of pleasures, incapable of discerning the essential from the passing. Prayer enables me to face the difficulties of my own daily life, and to see God’s presence in history and in the lives of others.
But I know through experience that I cannot do this alone. So, I have recourse to Mary, whose advocacy I bring to today’s mass. I ask her to adjust my lenses in accordance with her own, to see the presence of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in all I encounter.
