Introductory Prayer

Father, you created me and put me on earth for a purpose. Jesus, you died for me and call me to complete your work. Holy Spirit, you help me to carry out the work for which I was created and called. In your presence and name—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—I begin my reflection. May all my thoughts and inspirations have their origin in you and be directed to your glory.

Tuesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Why does Jesus make a difference? Why should we pay attention? In today’s gospel Matthew tells us why. As the storm rages around the disciples, Jesus appears in their midst and says “Do not be afraid. It is I.” (Ego eimi)  “I AM.” Only Jesus can claim the name above every other name for Himself, and therefore only He can truly bid us to “be not afraid.” In a world filled with voices that compete for our trust, let us ask ourselves who we believe will actually follow through on the promises.
