Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Many of the readings from the Old Testament towards the end of Lent speak of the hazards of speaking the truth. We have often heard the expression that no good deed goes unpunished, and sadly, many of us have had experiences when speaking out against injustice or error gained us little appreciation. At times, the temptation is to stay silent. Knowing when to speak should be governed by the first and foremost by the virtue of prudence, and that prudence at times needs to be strengthened by the virtue of fortitude. Ignatius set great stock in discerning between two choices and always trying to move towards the greater manifestation of God’s will. The season of Lent calls to pay attention to these choices, the commemoration of the passion recalls that sometimes our choices are causes of pain and discomfort, but it is Easter that provides with the hope of God’s vindication.
