Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels
God has decided that each one of us should have the special protection of one of His powerful servants, an angel to watch over us, to inspire us, to intercede for us and to aid us in carrying out the mission God has for us. Our guardian angel is a tremendous gift, and our Lord wants us to be aware of this gift. No one of us, no one of those whom we might be tempted to look down upon, lacks this heavenly gift. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” (Matthew 18:10)
Saint Peter Faber, the first Jesuit priest and early friend of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, often enlisted the guardian angels in his prayers. When Faber had to go have a conversation with someone and he knew that conversation would be difficult, the saint would turn in prayer to the guardian angel of the person, asking that angel to pray for that person and help him to hear what would truly help him to grow closer to Christ through that conversation. Today, let us thank the Lord for our guardian angel who watches over us, and let us remember that everyone who we meet is entrusted to the care of the angels as well.
