Third Sunday of Easter

Doesn’t my own journey to the home stretch resemble that of the two friends on their way to Emmaus, described in today’s gospel?

They asserted they were disciples of Jesus in whom they had faith and attachment, but they failed to recognize the meaning of his death and resurrection. Jesus had to open their eyes by citing Scripture.

I say I am Jesus’ disciple, but to understand what that means, don’t I have to have him walk along with me to guide me, to point out obstacles and detours on the road, to prevent me from stumbling or wonderingly aimlessly?

How often during the day, as I walk along toward my Emmaus, do I resort to a prayerful consideration of scripture with Jesus as my guide?

The two men said they hoped. . . . They didn’t hope; they dreamt. How easy it is to confuse hoping with dreaming. How did Jesus explain the difference to them? Do I ever ask him to do the same for me?

Another lesson: The two recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread, the Eucharist. What’s the lesson here for me?

Resolve: I shall ponder these questions and, if possible, I shall do so before the blessed sacrament, and I shall pray for my companions who are walking along with me to Emmaus.
