Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
The saints who have so deeply contemplated the Cross of Christ find therein the proof of God’s love. While the soldiers who carried out Christ’s execution would see in the cross only one of the more violent means of demonstrating their power over life and death, the saints see God’s loving choice to save us, no matter the cost to Himself. In the Cross, the Church contemplates how God loves, how far He has gone to show us His love, so that even in death we can know that His love is stronger than death and suffering. His wounds have brought healing to those who have been bitten by the ancient serpent.
And so, let us take up our cross each day and follow Christ who embraced us on the Cross. Let us look with the saints and see the love that led Our Lord to remain close to those who suffer from sin and injustice. Let us embrace Him on the Cross, trusting that Christ wishes to bring us wholeness in the midst of suffering, and the light of His glory in our darkest moments. Such is the faith we live by, faith in the Son of God who loved us, and who gave up His life for us (Gal 2:20).
