Memorial of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr
“Hindsight is 20/20” is a phrase that implies that clarity of understanding comes to us often after the fact. When we are in the thick of things, we may misunderstand and make bad decisions. Jesus today reproves his generation for making rash judgements about John the Baptist and himself.
What might he say to our generation today? We would hope to have learned from the past so as not to make the same mistakes. But how often are those who are most holy and Christ-like derided and judged as fools? How many times do we make hasty, unfair judgements of others?
Hindsight is 20/20. May we learn from our past mistakes, personal and collective. May we ask for the gift of wisdom to not fall into hasty, harsh judgements of others. May we welcome people as they are and be open to learning from them.
On this feast of St. Lucy, let us pray for her intercession that we may see aright.
