Tuesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

The notion of “a sin against the Holy Spirit” is not something easy to understand in the modern age. In the contemporary context, some can easily claim that they receive inspiration from the Holy Spirit to perform certain actions or interpret aspects of the Church's teachings and tradition. Then, whenever there is a group or someone who disagrees or opposes their cause, those people are committing sin against the Holy Spirit. In other words, some might believe that the Holy Spirit is guiding their works; therefore, whoever opposes or questions their works, projects, or interpretations is considered the enemy of the Holy Spirit, as they have sinned against the Holy Spirit.

In his letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul said now he confirms us with you in Christ and has anointed us. Here, St. Paul suggests that there are two ways for us to be confirmed in Christ. First, we have been anointed by the grace of the Holy Spirit and made members of Christ. For that reason, “he has also put his seal upon us" as the sign of our faith, and this is done through the Holy Spirit. Secondly, through the pledge, we are “given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment." The promise of the Holy Spirit in our hearts meant that it produced hope for eternal life. Therefore, we are not perfectly happy until we reach eternal life. In summary, we will have a union with Christ through the grace of the Holy Spirit and the glory of eternal life. Thus, a sin against the Holy Spirit occurs when the supernatural origin of the Church is denied, and people choose to subordinate the Church to the goals and purposes of a worldly salvation project, either in the name of eco-spirituality or in the struggle against corporate capitalism or any other similar endeavor.
