Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, Priest
You have put God into a corner, where you go to check on Him from time to time, like He was your houseplant. You check on Him when it pleases you, maybe even seven times a day. But when you are too tired or too busy, you leave Him in the corner, certain that He will be just fine without you. After all, He does not call out to you for attention the way so many others do.
Are you not to be pitied in this state? Who has so deceived you? “See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy according to the tradition of men, according to the elemental powers of the world” (Colossians 2:8). You tried to treat God like a captive, like a houseplant in the corner, but it was you who fell captive to an empty, seductive philosophy. You forgot that it is supposed to be the other way around. As St. Paul said: “take every thought captive in obedience to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
So, let God out of the corner, and kneel before Him in His infinite majesty. Ask Him to take your every thought captive. Ask Him to place you, mercifully, in His corner. “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places” (John 14:2).
