November’s darkening days, the cascade of leaves from trees to ground, and the chill in the air (for those of us who live in the Midwest) set the perfect stage for reflection. The season of fall and the feast of all Souls should provoke some thought of the temporal nature of our existence on earth. Too soon comes the blast of “holiday music” and certainly the day after Thanksgiving we go full steam ahead into tinsel and trappings. But perhaps during early November we can pause and reflect on our lives and the direction our lives are going. Looking for spiritual guidance? Nothing helps put things in proper order than a solitary walk through a cemetery, and the opportunity to view the monuments to important people and the simple markers of common workers who now all have the same address. A cemetery provides one of the better places to sift through what is, and what is not important.
