Third Sunday of Easter

Peter is the principal actor in this scene described in today’s gospel. He persuades the others to go fishing. When their boats are overflowing with fish, he recognizes Jesus standing on the shore and throws himself into the water so as to greet him. He remains the head honcho of the group, but is altogether seized by the resurrected Jesus.

As for Jesus, he seems very human. He prepares the breakfast and shares in eating it with the amazed apostles. This he does for us each time we receive the Eucharist.

Breakfast is over. Jesus poses a question to Peter that will remain with him for the rest of his of his life. It is the same question he asks me on a daily basis. Is my answer the same as Peter’s? How do I know? Well, how do I show that love for Jesus and for the brothers and sisters we share.

Resolve: After some reflection on the meaning of today’s Gospel for me personally, I shall ask Jesus to give me the habit of hearing him ask me continuously the question he asked Peter, ”do you love me?” and the grace to show that love in my words and actions with those whom I see and deal with on a daily basis.
