This is the second Gospel reading this week in which Jesus reveals a glimpse of what is to come at the end of the age. While such readings can feel challenging or even a little scary, it’s important to always zoom out and ask ourselves, “Okay . . . so why is this good news?”
If we are really honest with ourselves, we can admit just how many tantalizing distractions we face in the course of everyday life. Especially in the present digital era, we are constantly surrounded by attractive diversions that, while often fun in the moment, are just as often not really very good for us. It is incredibly easy to completely lose sight of who we really are and what we are supposed to be focused on during our time here on earth.
The good news of the Gospel is that God has created us for infinite happiness, joy, and fulfillment. He provides for us in every moment of our lives while inviting us to rest in the warmth of his infinite, provident love. But we are reminded that we have to choose. We have to be intentional. We have to actively accept God’s invitation to friendship. This isn’t always easy when we are being barraged by attractive digital temptations 24/7. But the good news is once again that God always provides the necessary strength and grace to all those who actively seek to remain close to Him. He will always provide for us in every possible way. We just have to choose to lean in and remain close to Him.
