Labor Day weekend ushers in the formal end of summer, and for many, this weekend is the official beginning of the academic year. Parents and students put summer aside and think about school. Thinking about school and the education it provides should be the opportunity for something beyond casual consideration. Every society has values and the fundamental purpose of any system of education is to advance the values of a given society and the best means to achieve these values. No wonder education has become a volatile issue in recent times. Education is the time when children spend more time with their teachers than they do with their parents. Every time a child walks out the door to school parents should remind themselves that somebody else is transmitting values to their son or daughter. The time spent in consideration of what occurs in a child’s educational environment is well spent and perhaps exists as one of the great responsibilities of parents and the community. After all, a society is determined by its values and one of the ways in which values are learned and justified is in school.
