Today, Jesuit communities and institutions within the Ignatian family celebrate all the saints of the Society. A saint is someone who the church recognizes as living heroic virtues and provides an aspect of their life that is worth imitation in terms of moving towards God. Some of these Jesuits have been recognized as living such virtue and heroism and are well known. We are all familiar with the life and exploits of Francis Xavier, Ignatius of Loyola, and the North American Martyrs. It pays to have good publicity! But there are other Jesuits who achieved great feats of piety and sacrifice that escaped the notice of the biographer’s pen. Most high school Latin teachers are probably in heaven, as well as many Jesuits who spent most of their lives correcting poorly written essays on the fall of the Roman Empire. Parish priests who spent hours in the confessional, visiting the sick, and offering early morning Mass to third shift workers no doubt are enjoying the beatific vision. Today’s celebration recognizes what God sees and others don’t. This gives cause for all of us to rejoice since our unseen struggles and efforts are not wasted but instead will be counted with greater merit since they were wrapped in humble silence as were the saints we celebrate today.
