The parable of the pearl of great price is about discovering the infinite love of God that alone can satisfy the deepest desires of the human heart. We spend so much of our lives looking for ways to satisfy our desires for love and fulfillment, but finite creatures can only satisfy us for a limited time. How restless we often are. As soon as exhaust the novelty or possibilities of one pleasure, we are instantly dissatisfied. Our hunger returns and we search for something else to temporarily satisfy or distract us.
Like the discovery of the pearl, the discovery of God’s love is a transformative experience. When one finally finds it, one realizes that it completely fulfills and satisfies them in ways they didn’t even realize were possible. There’s no going back. When one personally experiences the indescribable richness, fullness, and light of God’s infinite, passionate love, one understands that there is no finite creature, thing or pleasure that could ever come close to satisfying the infinite desires of their heart in the same way.
And so the only really sensible thing to do is buy the pearl because the love of God is infinitely more satisfying and fulfilling than any other temporary pleasure we could possibly ever receive from any number of finite creatures.
