Friday of the Third Week of Easter

Optional Memorial of Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Priest and Martyr

Jesus, in today’s Gospel, tells us what it means to “eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood.”

It means creating a single, one-of-a-kind unity with him and him with each of us; by this action, unity is created with all the members of his Body.

The Bread of Life He gives is vital for us. It enables to live, to survive, to take part in everlasting life. “Eat this Flesh . . . Drink this Blood.” Prayer intensifies and prolongs this unity.

As does love. We know if we love someone we want that person to be more open to a greater love on our part, and that our capacity to give and receive love be increased. That’s the nature of love, and the means to achieve greater love with the Lord is a frequent and more meaningful participation of the Eucharist.

Resolve: I shall spend some time today praying to grow in my love and desire for the Bread of Life which Jesus offers.
