Today’s gospel calls us to store up treasure in heaven. A fine idea except Jesus does not explain how this deposit location can be called upon to pay mortgage payments for the house, food for the family in the house, and for Catholic education to educate the children of the house. Today’s gospel provides greater clarity on how we are to use our resources: “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” The gospel identifies the basic principle that our values always have supporting structures. Our values always manage to find time and resources to support these values. As Christians, we must realize that the treasure in heaven identified in the gospel is reflected and found in the value of our families and those who depend on us for their support, health care, and education. Therefore, placing “treasure in heaven” presumes that some of that “treasure” will go for the care of those made in God’s image and likeness and that this same loving God has placed under our care. In the divine plan, God created the human family as an interdependent community that requires the proper use of resources and the intellect in the proper use of these resources. Storing up “treasure in heaven” identifies those times when we use our resources that enable us live lives that will assist us and others to get to heaven.
