Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr

Jesus warns the crowds to beware the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, of their example of trying to be outwardly holy while the heart and soul remain corrupt and evil. The Pharisees are so fixed on convincing others of their own holiness that they do not consider that it is God who must be convinced: the God who sees within. Thus He warns the crowds and us that, “There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known…” For nothing can be hidden from God. Therefore let us live in the light, in the open, with integrity, such that what people see on the outside is a true reflection of what is within us. If we live our faith only inwardly, but outwardly conform to the world for fear of the world, are we not Pharisees just the same? We should not fear any who could harm us physically, for in the resurrection all will be made whole. It is harm to the soul that we ought to fear.

Otherwise, live openly, live with courage, for God sees you, and if the Cross teaches us anything it is that not only are we worth more to God than many sparrows but we are, in His eyes, worth dying for.
