It doesn’t take much effort on my part to respond to the invitation Jesus gives me in today’s Gospel, and there are some days when I feel more eager to do so than others. To respond? What does that mean? It means I should get into the habit of confiding in him about what burdens and weighs me down. That is an essential of intimacy. I must come to him as I am, so that he can come to me as he is, my friend, my redeemer.
To find “rest” does not mean I should seek a siesta at work. It means I should be as active as he was when he, “meek and humble of heart”, immersed himself in the crowds that surrounded him. It means being an active apostle, according to my state of life.
Jesus, “meek and humble of heart,” invites me to confide in him to tackle all burdens that come my way. That’s what prayer is all about. He invites me to imitate him in my daily comings and goings. If I do so with confidence in him I shall find the peace that flows from his special love for me.
Resolve: I shall recommend to Jesus today the many people in the world who carry yokes that make mine seem like a feather. I shall ask him to give me the grace to share these burdens, if not personally, then in prayer, and that through oue burdens, each might come to know him better.
