Optional Memorial of Saints Nereus and Achilleus, Martyrs

Why is it better that Jesus go back to Heaven? “For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.” Why is it better for the Spirit to come and for Jesus to leave? Imagine if Jesus remained among us; where would He live? Perhaps in a palace in Jerusalem, or maybe in the Vatican. How many of us would make the effort to go and catch a glimpse of Him; how few of us would ever meet Him, or speak to Him, or touch Him! But if He returns to the Father and sends the Holy Spirit, He can be with us always, in a different way. Through the Holy Spirit He is in our midst when two or more gather in His Name; by the power of the Holy Spirit bread and wine become the means by which He is truly present to us, by which He may commune with us. While we may at times wish Jesus was walking among us as He did so long ago, that we might see Him, touch Him, speak with Him, in a mysterious irony that only faith can understand, by leaving this world for Heaven, He is closer to us than He ever was before.
