One foot in front of the other. In sending his disciples on mission, Jesus asks them to take the bare minimum, allowing only what might facilitate their getting there, namely, sandals and a walking stick. No food, no sack, no money. What is most important is the encounter.
They were there not only to give the Good News that heals body and soul, but also, in their poverty, they were to receive all the good that the people would offer them: food, shelter, warm smiles and heartfelt “Thank yous,” or simply a growing trust in the one who sent them, in spite of any adversity they faced.
Often, before a great event, a difficult task, an uncertain social situation, we live fearing the encounter, unsure about what we’ll be able to offer. The important thing is getting there. One foot in front of the other. We will be able to provide something, and much will be given to us.
