Resources on Happiness, Suffering & Human Transcendence

This page is concerned with the second of the four pillars of intellectual evangelization, addressing the mythical conflict between suffering and love. As noted on our homepage, many of our young people (and adults) have come to believe, at least partially, in this secular myth which may be stated as follows: “If God were loving, he would not permit suffering in the world – particularly the suffering of innocent people. Since there is tremendous suffering, even of the innocent, I must conclude that either God is not loving (in which case, he is not relevant to me), or he does not exist at all.”

This secular myth does not stand up to the evidence of human transcendence or a philosophical assessment of happiness, suffering, and love. The evidence we present is quite compelling, and can maintain, defend, and advance the faith of people who may be influenced by this myth.
